How to Become a Rape Crisis Nurse

A Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) is a registered nurse with advanced training in forensic examination of sexual assault victims. A SANE performs an examination by collecting evidence, providing psychological care, treating minor injuries, conducting STD preventative measures and administering tests for HIV and pregnancy. Before pursuing a career as a SANE, you must complete three crucial steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Earn an associate's or bachelor's degree in nursing and complete and pass the National Council Licensing Examination (NCLEX-RN).

    • 2

Work 2 to 3 years as a nurse in direct patient care in emergency nursing, pediatrics, women's health or an acute care/critical care practice. SANE training is a continuing education course.

    • 3

Fulfill all training requirements. Requirements for SANE training vary from state to state, but classroom training typically lasts up to a week with a curriculum including the role of the SANE, victim advocacy, law enforcement and the justice system and a medio-legal exam. The nurse then completes several months of clinical practice in the community.
