How to Become a Certified Nurse's Assistant in Missouri

Certified nurse's assistants in Missouri work in nursing homes and other medical settings, providing care to residents or patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. CNAs perform such duties as "taking vital signs, bathing, feeding, dressing, toileting, ambulating, comforting and listening to client's concerns," according to the CNA Certification and Training website. Prospective CNAs must complete a training course and take a state exam to become fully licensed in Missouri. Some people with prior training may be able to take the "CNA Challenge" and receive permission from the state to take the test without first taking the state-approved course.

Instructions

Choose an accredited CNA training program that is approved by the state of Missouri. A list is provided in references. Most training programs are offered at community colleges or vocational-technical schools, though some online courses are available. Missouri requires CNA students to receive 75 hours of classroom instruction and complete 100 hours of on-the-job training.

Complete the CNA course, which includes classroom work and clinical training. You will complete courses in "basic nursing skills; fire safety; disaster training; resident safety and rights; and social and psychological problems of residents and the methods of caring for mentally confused residents, such as those with Alzheimer's disease," according to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.

Take the CNA Challenge, which allows you to take the state exam without first taking the required Missouri CHA training program, if you have received CNA training or its equivalent in another state or country, or meet other special criteria. See the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services CNA web page for complete details.

Register for and take the Missouri CNA exam. When you pass this exam, you will be listed as active on the Missouri state CNA registry. Employers will check the registry to see that you have completed CNA training and passed the exam. You will be able to work in nursing homes, hospitals, doctors' offices, and other medical care facilities once you are certified.
