How to Calculate Completion Rates

Completion rate is a term used by educational institutions to track statistics on course completions. It compares course credits attempted versus course credits completed. From these statistics, institutions can calculate the completions rates as a percentage. Educational institutions use this information to evaluate overall student engagement and coursework effectiveness.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the number of students in the educational institution.

    • 2

Calculate the number of credits hours each student signed up for, or attempted, during the school year or period in question.

    • 3

Add together the credit hours attempted by all students to find the total credit hours attempted.

    • 4

Determine the total credit hours completed by each student.

    • 5

Add together the credit hours completed by all students to find the total credit hours completed.

    • 6

Calculate the completion rate using the formula completion rate = total hours completed/total hours attempted. For example, if the total hours attempted from Step 3 is 3500 hours and the total hours completed from step 5 is 2400, then the completion rate = 2400/3500 = 0.6857 or 68.57 percent.
