The Department of Herbal Medicine at the American College of Healthcare Sciences offers two programs in herbal studies through its online learning studies. The "Master Herbalist" diploma in herbal studies consists of introductory classes in herbalism, anatomy and physiology, medical applications for herbs and holistic medicine. The associate of applied science in complementary alternative medicine with a major in herbal medicine consists of coursework in anatomy and physiology,nutrition, body care, aromatherapy and holistic pathophysiology, in addition to herbal studies. Graduate certificates in botanical safety and herbal medicine are also available.

The Rocky Mountain Herbal Institute provides distance learning courses in Chinese herbology as well as environmental health. Their courses feature interactive software tools called Herbal Think that provides access to reference materials and self-administered tests. Three levels of certification are available, with the first two levels available entirely through distance education. Course topics include Chinese medical theory, health assessment, nutrition, herbal formulation, environmental health issues, the political and social issues of herbalism, patient care and clinical applications.

The North American Institute of Medical Herbalism provides distance learning courses in medical herbalism. The school is currently developing a two-year certificate program in Western Herbalism that will be available through distance learning and accredited by the Colorado Department of Higher Education. Stand-alone courses include an introductory course in medical herbalism and intermediate courses in herbal actions and formulation, vitalist therapeutics and acute symptoms, adverse effects of common herbs and insulin resistance. An advanced intensive course in "materia medica" is also available. Coursework is delivered primarily through audio recordings and lectures alongside text learning materials and an online reference library.
