How to Respond to Discussion Questions in the Online Learning Setting

Online discussion questions take the place of classroom discussion in an online learning environment. Class participation is usually one of the grading factors in the breakdown of points. Participating in the online discussion is mandatory for many classes. The teacher may require a set number of comments each week. The comments should be well thought out and worded well. Refrain from attacking other class members if they disagree with you. Most online discussion questions will take place in a forum created specifically for the class.

Instructions

    • 1

Log on to the forum for class discussion. The website may be a part of your online course materials or it may be separate. The information should be in your course outline information.

    • 2

Read the discussion question topics and select one you would like to comment on. Click on that thread and read the current discussion and comments from other students.

    • 3

Look over your notes from the class materials and think back over your reading. Consider any outside reading you have done as you list on a separate piece of paper points you want to make .

    • 4

Compose your comment, including your points from your outside reading, and refer to previous comments that have been made whether you agree with them or you do not. Cite any sources from which you pull quotes or facts. If possible, include links so the other students can refer to the material.

    • 5

Proofread your comment to check for clarity and spelling errors. Double check your links to make sure they work correctly.

    • 6

Post the comment to the forum. Come back in a few hours to see if anyone has responded to your viewpoint, and make additional comments to argue your point or to agree with something someone else has said.
