How Does Online Learning Work?

According to a study conducted by the Sloan Consortium, nearly 4 million students took at least one online class in the fall of 2007, representing a 12 percent increase from the year before. If you or someone you know is considering joining the growing trend of online learning, then understanding how online classes work will help you make an appropriate decision.
  1. Class Lectures

    • Online classes can provide their lectures in many different formats, usually at the discretion of the professor. Many professors create PowerPoint presentations with a voice-over. Others provide lectures only with audio, and others make available full video lectures.

    Assignments

    • There are many ways assignments are given and completed in an online learning environment. Typically a written assignment can be uploaded directly into the class system or emailed straight to a professor. Additionally, many textbooks today come with online materials, including quizzes and homework assignments, which can be completed on their partner websites.

    Test Taking

    • Tests in distance-learning classes are usually administered through a timed interface. A student may have a one-hour timer, for example, to complete a test that combines multiple choice and short essay questions. Typically the test can only be opened once, meaning someone can't start it and then complete it later. Answers for multiple-choice or true/false questions are usually returned immediately, while essays and other written answers have to be graded individually.

    Student Interaction

    • Students in online classes are encouraged to get to know one another and discuss course topics in online message boards. Many courses require participation in this area to simulate a normal classroom discussion environment.

    Blackboard

    • Many online learning programs make use of the Blackboard system. Blackboard allows the integration of all of the above features in one website, and also offers many additional features and a great level of flexibility. For example, you can pull up a list of other students in the class to email, or you can review all your grades and completed assignments.

    Computer Requirements

    • In general there are no specific computer requirements in terms of the operating system you need to take online classes. Some classes may require the use of specific software; however, in the majority of instances all additional programs you will need are accessible on other websites or through the course site. The most important thing you should have is a reliable high-speed Internet connection, which will make accessing course materials and taking tests easier.
