How to Assess Financial Aid for a Student That Does Not Live With His Parents

Financial aid allows students to go to school when they might not otherwise be able to afford it. Financial aid needs differ from student to student, depending on each student's financial state and on the costs of the particular school they would like to attend. For a student who does not live with his parents, financial aid needs also cover other types of expenses, because it is assumed that the student will get no help with any college-related cost.

Instructions

    • 1

Consider the cost of the school for the student, and what the tuition will be. This is the bulk of the student's financial aid, whether or not he lives with his parents.

    • 2

Add in cost of living expenses. Assess the living expenses based on the general cost of rent off-campus or residence fees on-campus, and food in the area where the college is located.

    • 3

Assess the student's other financial needs as they may arise, depending on the school. Some expenses you may need to address include buying books, eating on campus, and whether or not the student will need to purchase equipment like a computer. Consider other expenses like health insurance, parking and transportation.
