Top Online Masters Degrees in Public Affairs

Professional and nontraditional students interested in pursuing a Masters of Public Administration (MPA) are often unable to attend traditional, brick-and-mortar programs because of inflexible schedules and geographic constraints. Unfortunately for such students, the majority of MPA programs accredited by the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA) are offered at campus-based universities. However, there are a handful of top MPA online degree programs which have received NASPAA accreditation.
  1. Upper Iowa University

    • Upper Iowa University offers an NASPAA-accredited MPA online degree program. This program has four areas of emphasis; Health and Human Services, Homeland Security, Justice Administration, and Public Personnel Management.

The online learning platform delivers courses which are archived (asynchronous). This gives students the flexibility to attend courses at their convenience. The online system also provides students with online assignment schedules, electronic lectures, reading materials, and access to student support services. Students must complete 42 credit hours to complete the Masters of Public Administration degree, and may enroll at any point throughout the academic year.

Walden's online learning system provides students with archived (asynchronous) courses on a platform which houses digital lectures and reading materials. Students also have access to library resources, various student services, and discussion forums for each course through which professors and students interact and share information.

Students must take 51 credit hours to graduate from Walden University's Masters of Public Administration program, which takes most students approximately 18 months.

    Strayer University

    • Strayer University, which offers an NASPAA-accredited MPA online program, is unique among such programs in that it offers students the option to take either live (synchronous) or archived (asynchronous) courses. For students who prefer real-time interactions with instructors and fellow students, Strayer University's online learning system may be preferable, though it should be noted that live classes provide a less flexible schedule.

Along with assignment resources and library services, the online learning platform provides students with access to tutorial services and various academic supports. The Masters of Public Administration program can typically take between two and three years to complete.
