One of the biggest challenges of online learning is time management. Even though you are not in a traditional classroom you must make time to do the daily assignments, participate in chats, take the assigned tests, prepare for classes and study. Online classes are often just as challenging, if not more so, than a traditional brick-and-mortar institution. It is much easier to plan your schedule around online classes but you will still have to make time to perform each task in order to be successful.
Technology can be a problem for some online students. Often there is new software to learn, and you must learn how to maneuver in the online classrooms. This can be stressful for one who is not familiar with computers. Others may not have the technology on their computers or their Internet programs that will keep up with what the school offers. For example, if the student has a slow dial-up connection and the class features large files to download, it may be frustrating for the student to obtain all of the material they need for the class.
It is often harder to understand someone's meaning in online courses. You miss the personal relationships and everyday interaction with others when you communicate online. It is also harder to understand the true meaning of what someone is trying to say when they type their comments instead of speaking them. Someone might be teasing when they make a comment, for example, but without the benefit of voice tone and inflection, it can be difficult to tell.
Online classes are generally more expensive than on-ground, traditional classes. In order to go to a top of the line, accredited school you will have to pay more for the education. There may also be hidden fees such as technology fees or testing fees that you would not incur in a traditional classroom. Online classes are convenient but you will pay for the convenience.
