A List of Distance Learning Universities

Attending college can be more than just attending a physical brick-and-mortar building. Distance education is a very viable ( and popular) alternative to those that wish to stay at home while attending college. According to the Sloane Institute, in 2006 about 3.5 million students were enrolled in at least one distance education course, or 20 percent of students who were enrolled in higher education were taking at least one distance learning course. Today, obtaining an associate, bachelor's, or a master's degree is feasible from the comforts of your own home.
  1. Empire State College - SUNY

    • Empire State College, which is under the umbrella of the State University of New York system (SUNY), offers a variety of associate, bachelor's, and master's degrees in a variety of fields. Some of the programs offered are business, management, economics, community and human services, and historical and cultural studies. Degrees can be self designed, combining two or more disciplines. A student can, for example, design a degree in human services management, or cultural economics. Each student is assigned a mentor, and the mentor will help the student plan the correct course of action by having an individualized degree program planner in place. Semesters are 15 weeks long, so they are not self-paced but rather college-paced. A variety of financial aid packages are available as well.
