Public Colleges in Virginia With Online Graduate Programs

For those interested in pursuing a graduate degree in Virginia, there are a number of options. The public colleges and universities of Virginia offer programs and benefits that exceed those offered by most states. Of the 15 public colleges and universities in Virginia, three of them offer online graduate degrees that combine the flexibility of an online program with the added benefit of in-state tuition.

    • James Madison University offers two online degrees through the distance education program. These two degrees are in the field of information security and are intended to serve as continuing education for working professionals in the information security field. The degrees offered are a master's in computer information security and an MBA in information security. In addition to the master's degree, graduates of the computer information security program also receive two National Security Agency approved certificates: Information Systems Security Professionals and Information Systems Security Officers.

    Old Dominion University

    • Old Dominion University offers the most distance education options in the state. In addition to master's level programs, there are doctoral programs offered online. Graduate degrees are available through the colleges of arts & letters, education and health sciences. There are also degrees offered through video streaming, a synchronous option for students to view class lectures in real time. Degrees offered through this program include engineering, education, and occupational and technical studies.

    Virginia Commonwealth University

    • The distance learning programs offered through Virginia Commonwealth University primarily supplement the on-campus offerings. However, the School of Allied Health has specifically designed programs that are offered online. The main program offered in this format is the master's of science in health administration, which is a 22-month program designed for health care professionals offered online with a limited residency requirement at the Richmond campus.
