      Grasp the scalpel by the handle. Point the blade away from yourself and others. Make sure the blade and the blade lock are facing upward with the slanted edge of the scalpel blade toward your hand.

      Grip the slanted edge of the scalpel blade with the tips of the forceps. Make sure you have a firm grasp on the blade so the forceps don't slip off.

      Lift the blade from the slanted end carefully until the blade lock hole comes away from the lock. You will hear a click and the blade will appear to be loose on the scalpel handle.

      Pull the blade toward the tip to remove it. You may need to twist the blade a little if it lodges as you slide it off.

      Throw the old blade away in a specified sharps container.
