Harvard Medical School's excellence goes back to its founding in 1782, and it has had over a dozen Nobel Laureates. U.S. News & World Report ranked Harvard as having the best research medical school and the 15th-best primary care school in its annual "Best Medical Schools" ranking in 2009. Students also learn at 49 hospital-based clinical departments. In addition to the M.D. program, Harvard has a Ph.D. program in the Division of Medical Sciences and has a handful of joint degree programs, which are an M.D./Ph.D. program, an M.D./Ph.D. program in Social Sciences, an M.D. and an MBA, a MD and a Master of Public Health and an M.D. and a Master of Public Policy.

Next to the Tufts University School of Medicine is the Tufts Medical Center, a top-notch academic medical center that is the school's main clinical affiliate. That's one of the many things that Tufts has to offer to future doctors. U.S. News & World Report ranked Tufts as No. 40 in primary care medical schools and No. 45 in research medical schools in the magazine's annual rankings in 2009. Tufts trains its M.D.s with the fundamental study of science and clinical training, according to the school. Tufts offers joint-degree programs, including an M.D. and a Ph.D., an M.D. and a MPH, an M.D. and a MA with Tufts' Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, an M.D. with a BS and MS in Bioengineering through a partnership with Tufts College of Engineering and an M.D. and MBA in Health Management, according to the school.

The University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) began in 1962 and is the state's lone public academic health sciences center, according to the school. UMMS is clinical partners with UMass Memorial Health Care, central Massachusetts' biggest health care provider. In 2006, professor Craig Mello, Ph.D., won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, along with Stanford University's Andrew Fire, Ph.D., for discoveries relating to RNA interference. U.S. News & World Report rated UMMS as the seventh-best primary care school in its "Best Medical Schools" ranking in 2009. The school also finished No. 48 in the magazine's research medical school ranking. UMMS offers a nM.D., a Ph.D. and a joint M.D./Ph.D. program. Nursing students can earn an MS, GEP, Ph.D. and DNP.
