Medical Colleges in Chicago, Illinois

Home to nearly three million people, Chicago is the cultural hub of the American Midwest, with hundreds of theaters, art galleries, museums and other cultural institutions. The Chicago metropolitan area also features numerous world-class colleges and universities, several of which provide training for future medical professionals.
  1. Rush University: Rush Medical College

    • Rush University Medical Center’s Rush Medical College is Chicago’s oldest medical school, chartered in 1837. Today, the college says it includes “over 2,600 faculty and staff, 525 medical students, and 620 residents and fellows.” Departments at Rush Medical College include biochemistry, preventive medicine and nursing, and several multiple degree programs are available. The school also offers the Rush University Simulation Laboratory, which facilitates training in research and crisis management by providing simulations of human patients suffering a variety of signs and symptoms. These simulated patients are “treated” by students as faculty and other students observe, and sessions are recorded for later analysis.

    University of Chicago: Pritzker School of Medicine?

    • The University of Chicago has been training medical students since 1927. In 1968 the University’s medical school was renamed for the famed Chicago philanthropic family. A part of the University’s biological sciences division, the school is affiliated with the University of Chicago Hospitals, which have appeared on U.S. News and World Report’s Honor Roll, a listing of the nation's top hospitals. Unlike many medical schools, Pritzker is located on the campus of its university, which the school says allows “intellectual and social advantages” and increased opportunities for interdisciplinary study. Accordingly, the school offers numerous dual degree options, including opportunities in business, law and social sciences.

    Northwestern University: Feinberg School of Medicine

    • Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine is located downtown on the campus of Northwestern Memorial Hospital, a major medical and research institution in Chicago, with 1,600 affiliated doctors who also serve as the school’s faculty. Founded in 1859, Feinberg offers a full-time MD program, several joint degrees, graduate and continuing education. Feinberg conducts many clinical trials in areas such as cancer, diabetes and Parkinson’s Disease, and in 2009 the school was ranked by U.S. New & World Report as the nation’s 19th best medical research school.
