The Keck School of Medicine of USC, founded in 1885, is the oldest medical school in Southern California. Keck was one of the first medical schools to provide hands-on experience in patient care from the start of medical school by adopting introduction to clinical medicine courses for first-year students. The school, located on the Health Science Campus in Los Angeles, is home to several research institutes, including the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Eli and Edythe Broad Center for Stem Cell Research and Regenerative Medicine, and the USC Institute for Global Health.
USC's Thornton School of Music, located on the University Park campus, offers university chorus, men's chorus and women's chorus courses for elective credit. The school, founded one year before the medical school, is ranked among the top 1 percent of U.S. music schools and conservatories.
When Emory University's School of Medicine moved into a new building on Emory's main campus in Atlanta in 2007, it was able to boost enrollment by 15 percent to help relieve a projected shortage of physicians. The school also adopted a new curriculum that emphasizes small-group learning and more interaction among students and faculty. The building features wireless technology, experiential learning through simulation labs and patient exam rooms, and a dissection facility equipped with computers.
Emory's music department offers several graduate-level choral courses, including Choral Conducting 1, 11 and 111 and Special Topics in Choral Music. The university has two choruses: the well-respected Emory University Concert Choir and the University Chorus. Auditions are required for these choruses.
The Yale School of Medicine, founded in 1801, is known for its biomedical research, curriculum and advanced health care. The Yale system of medical education requires student self-evaluation, independent thinking and investigation which are facilitated by learning in small seminar, conference and tutorial settings. The medical school, located in New Haven, Conn., is home to one of the United States' oldest schools of public health and the internationally recognized Child Study Center.
Yale's Institute of Scared Music offers a graduate program in choral conducting as well as credit for participating in the university's ensembles, including Repertory Chorus, Recital Chorus, Yale Camerata and Yale Schola Cantorum. Auditions are required for these choirs. (Reference 10)
The Ohio State University College of Medicine is seeking to "set the standard for academic medical centers of the future, creating dramatic and dynamic research, clinical and learning environments," according to its website. The school also is a leader in personalized health care delivery based on each person's biological, behavioral and environmental characteristics.
Ohio State's School of Music allows chorus classes to be taken for credit at the undergraduate or graduate level. The department has a wealth of ensembles, including its flagship Chorale, a University Chorus, the Gospel and Spiritual Ensemble and men's and women's glee clubs.
