• Southeastern Louisiana University has a Bachelor of Science degree program in chemistry, which is one of the preferred undergraduate degrees for students who wish to become medical examiners. Bowie State University

• Bowie State University has a Bachelor of Science degree program in biology, which is the other preferred option for students to study when they are interested in becoming medical examiners. In this program, students explore a variety of topics within biology as a natural science. Some of the required prerequisites include introductory biology, general genetics, elements of calculus, general botany, general zoology and general chemistry. The required core course load consists of 46 credits and includes classes in cell biology, general microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, physics, organic chemistry and physiology. Students must also complete core electives, which include choices such as biology of drug plants, heredity and human affairs, biology of environmental pollution and pathogenic microbiology.

University of Michigan Medical School

• The University of Michigan Medical School offers a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree program, which is the final degree that is needed in order to begin a career as a medical examiner. Upon completion of this program, students will have mastered history taking, communication skills and physical examination skills. Students will also be able to perform routine therapeutic and diagnostic procedures in a safe manner. During the first two years, students study the foundations of medical practice, which consists of courses on topics within normal organ systems and abnormal organ systems. During the third and fourth years, the focus is on clinical education, which involves expanding knowledge and exploring the future. During this time, students transfer between departments to obtain clinical education in areas such as internal medicine, surgery, psychiatry and obstetrics and gynecology. It is best to choose a residency that has an emphasis on forensics.
