Before applying to a DPT program, you'll need:
* Bachelor's Degree: Most programs require a bachelor's degree, though the specific major isn't usually prescribed. However, a strong foundation in science (biology, chemistry, anatomy, physiology) is highly recommended and often required.
* Prerequisites: Specific prerequisite courses in science and sometimes mathematics are almost always required. These vary by program, so carefully check the admission requirements of the DPT programs you're interested in.
* High GPA: A competitive GPA is essential for admission to a DPT program.
* GRE Scores (sometimes): Some, but not all, DPT programs require GRE scores as part of their application process. Check individual program requirements.
* Observation Hours: Many programs require or strongly recommend observation hours in a physical therapy clinic to confirm your interest and understanding of the profession.
After graduating with your DPT, you'll need to pass a licensing examination (the National Physical Therapy Examination or NPTE) to be able to practice legally. Continuing education is also required throughout your career to maintain licensure.
