Education and Training
ORTs typically have a high school diploma or equivalent, and may receive on-the-job training or complete a formal training program. CSTs, on the other hand, must complete a formal education program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). These programs typically take two years to complete and include both classroom instruction and clinical experience.
Scope of Practice
ORTs typically perform basic tasks in the operating room, such as preparing the operating room for surgery, setting up surgical instruments and equipment, and assisting the surgeon during surgery. CSTs, on the other hand, are responsible for a wider range of tasks, including:
* Preparing patients for surgery
* Monitoring patients during surgery
* Assisting the surgeon with surgical procedures
* Ensuring that all surgical instruments and equipment are properly sterilized
* Maintaining a sterile environment in the operating room
Certification
CSTs are required to pass a national certification exam administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). ORTs are not required to be certified, but some employers may prefer to hire ORTs who have completed a formal training program and/or have experience working in an operating room.
Career Opportunities
