Tax Law Schools

Our federal tax code is incredibly complex and frequently used. Tax law encompasses corporate tax, tax litigation, municipal finance and many more subspecialties. To work as a tax attorney, you must attain a minimum of a Juris Doctor degree, though advanced degrees are highly recommended for success in the field.
  1. New York University

    • "U.S. News & World Report" lists New York University as the country's No. 1 law school, an accomplishment achieved each year since 1992 when the rankings originated, as of 2010. The NYU graduate tax program consists of five areas of taxation: business tax, estate planning, international tax, tax policy and general tax.

    Georgetown University

    • The Georgetown University Law Center accepts up to 10 Tax L.L.M students as Graduate Tax Scholars. Scholars accepted into this fellowship receive awards of full or partial tuition. Fellowship acceptance is based on interest in tax policy and potential to excel in the field.

    University of Florida Levin College of Law

    • University of Florida Fredric G. Levin College of Law was founded in 1909 and is one of the nation's largest law schools. The school is named for alumnus Fredric G. Levin, now a prominent trial lawyer and financial supporter of the college. According to "Hispanic Business Review," this school is one of the top 10 in the nation for Hispanics.

      Its Graduate Taxation Program offers Master of Laws degrees in taxation and international taxation. It also offers the United States' only Doctor of Juridical Science in taxation, an intensive program that admits only a very limited number of students.

    Northwestern University

    • Northwestern University School of Law was founded in 1859 as the Union College of Law. The 2009 Princeton Review Rankings placed the school first for Best Career Prospects. With a median LSAT in the top 2 percent nationwide, admission is highly competitive. According to the law school, its tax program has one of the lowest student-teacher ratios of any graduate tax program.

    Harvard Law

    • The Harvard Law School student body consists of students from every state in the United States and more than 70 other countries. Approximately 1,700 of the nearly 2,000 Harvard Law students each year are pursuing a Juris Doctor degree in preparation for a successful career in the legal field. Harvard's Tax Law Program offers course work in tax law to all its Juris Doctor and Master of Laws students, as well as an International Tax Program offering tax law studies to those from outside the United States.

    Boston University

    • Boston University School of Law opened its doors in 1872 and now proudly boasts a 93 percent overall bar passage rate. The school is filled with rich history of which the faculty, students and alumni are incredibly proud. Lelia Josephine Robinson was the first female BU Law graduate in 1881 and the first woman admitted to the bar in 1882. In 1959 Boston University School of Law became the first in New England to offer a Master of Laws in Taxation program.
