According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a master's degree in library science is the minimum educational requirement for employment in public, special and academic libraries. Aspiring librarians and information science professionals should seek out programs that are accredited by the American Library Association.
  1. SUNY Albany

    • Graduates of the Master of Science in Information Science program at SUNY Albany find employment in libraries, archives and government agencies. The program consists o 42 credits and students can select from one of five concentration areas, such as Library and Information Services or Information Systems and Technology. All students in the program take required courses in research methods and fundamentals of information technology as well as a for-credit internship. They then complete courses related to the selected area of concentration. Prospective applicants need a bachelor's degree and must submit GRE scores along with transcripts and three recommendations.

    UCLA

    • UCLA's master's program in library and information science is available to students who have a bachelor's degree. Additional admission's requirements include a personal statement, resume, three recommendations, completion of computer programming and statistics courses and GRE scores. Students who enter the MLIS program select from specializations in informatics, archival studies or library studies. After taking core courses, students complete 12 elective courses in their specialization area. A portfolio or thesis is required of all students in the MLIS program.

    University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

    • Students in the master's program in library and information science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign can customize their program of study to their individual interests, such as community college librarianship or library services for children. Students take 40 hours of classes, two of which are core courses. The remaining credits are selected by students in accordance with their selected program of study. The master's degree can be completed on-campus or online and full-time and part-time options are available. Applicants submit undergraduate transcripts, reference letters, two essays and GRE scores.

    Texas Woman's University

    • The master's degree in library science at Texas Woman's University is designed for individuals who wish to work in libraries and other information environments. Students in the 36-hour program take core courses in information organization, collection development and library management, along with a required practicum. Students also take library science electives that cover topics such as the public library, online information retrieval and multicultural librarianship. Application to the MLS program requires college transcripts, standardized test scores, a resume, essay and three recommendation letters.
