How to Title an Educational Portfolio

An educational portfolio is "a collection of artifacts, evidence and reflection documenting the candidate's achievements," according to Kean University in Union, N.J. This collection must attempt to encompass the entire body of research and work conducted by the candidate. The portfolio may include writing samples, photographs, performance evaluations and term project examples, among other things. The title should reflect the overarching theme or message the body of the portfolio represents.

Instructions

    • 1

Write to program faculty members who assisted you during the course of your studies. Ask them for feedback on your time in the program, the materials you chose and your personal strengths in the program.

    • 2

Use this feedback to assemble your body of work. Choose only the pieces that received the highest feedback, and eliminate some of the pieces that have proven mediocre or incomplete.

    • 3

Arrange a table of contents for your portfolio after putting your pieces in chronological order. Make sure this order has a flow that is pleasurable to read through.

    • 4

Reflect on each piece. Write two to three sentences on your general thoughts and conclusions for each piece.

    • 5

Write a rough philosophy statement. Draw from your short reflections for ideas. Kean University suggests that this statement "[address] the candidate's view of the essence of [her] education based on documentation and experience and supported by research." Make sure there is evidence to the claims of your philosophy statement.

    • 6

Write a rough introduction to your portfolio. Use the broad, rough draft of your philosophy statement. Pull out an introduction by narrowing the philosophy statement down into something more concise.

    • 7

Create your title by pulling out the most important sentence in your introduction. Choose two to five words that you feel encompass your portfolio as a whole and give the reader an accurate depiction of what's inside.
