Brainstorm a list of positive character traits you have. Think back through your life to times when these traits were gained or demonstrated. Make an additional list of these anecdotes.
Organize your lists. Look for an interesting theme to run from trait to trait, or a story that illustrates all the traits of your character. Write an outline of your essay, organizing your ideas into a flow from one to the next that makes sense.
Grab the reader's attention. Use an interesting quote or an unexpected question, or jump right into the story to grab hold of your reader from the start. Continue to write, following your outline. Be true to your own voice. Remember, the point of the essay is to let the reader know who you are.
Edit your essay. Ask a parent, a teacher and a friend to read your essay. Correct all spelling, grammar and punctuation mistakes. Ask the people who know you best if your true self comes through the writing. Look for places to strengthen content.
Be concise as your continue to edit. Do not just ramble about your anecdote. Make a real point about why you will fit in at and be an asset to that institution. Keep it short and sweet. Do not say in six words what you can say in four words.
