How to Check if an Institute Is Accredited

Finding a good college to go to is hard enough, but with the almost endless list of brick and online colleges, the choices seem to be endless. One thing a student should keep in mind is to find out whether or not the school is accredited by an appropriate agency. This will help students avoid schools that lie about their accreditation of high standards, more commonly known as "Diploma Mills."

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the U.S. Department of Education web page. Scroll down until you see the section marked "How do I find..." in the bottom left-hand corner.

    • 2

Click on the link marked "College Accreditation." If you know the name of the school, click on "Get Data for one accredited institution/campus/site." If you would prefer a list, click on "Download accreditation data for all institutions, programs and sites."

    • 3

Enter the name of the institution in the box provided. The more information you supply, the better your results will be, so include the city and address if possible.

    • 4

      Click on "Search."

    • 5

Click on the link to select the correct school from the list of results. A new window should appear with the accreditation information you requested.
