Undergraduate students at Harvard University concentrate on women, gender and sexuality. Harvard offers three options: capstone track, thesis track and joint concentration. Students take the prerequisite women’s study classes in all three tracks. However, for capstone students, seniors take a seminar allowing them to synthesize their learning with their working future. Thesis students work with a tutor to focus their concentration on a specific area of women’s studies. Students can also choose a joint concentration between women's studies and another major such as anthropology, music or public policy.
Williams College students can choose women's, gender and sexuality studies as their major. They take nine courses related to the field; four are required courses and the remaining get distributed among theory and sociological topics related to women's studies. Three of their electives must form a thematic grouping such as artistic expression or historical perspectives. The department also awards honors to graduates if they complete an honors project, present the work and receive an honors designation by the department's honors committee.
Pomona College offers two options for majoring in gender and women's studies. Students can choose to major in women's studies directly, thus concentrating on theory and interdisciplinary studies related to feminist scholarship. Alternatively, students can choose to link their feminist research with another discipline of their choosing, allowing them to inform their future career with knowledge from feminist scholarship. For either option, students take four core women's studies courses, feminist theory and ethnic studies; the standalone major requires more courses in theory while the joint major emphasizes focus on both areas.
Stanford University students can take feminist, gender and sexuality studies as a single major, a joint major secondary major. Students design their own interdisciplinary focus. Core classes include an introductory course to the discipline, several theory courses, a practicum course and electives from the social sciences and humanities. Likewise, students work with their faculty advisor to focus their major thematically around concentrations such as Chicana feminism, cross-cultural perspectives on gender and gender and education. The faculty encourages students to focus their studies around themes they develop themselves.
