Harvard University's Department of Psychology is among the best in the United States. Like many of Harvard's graduate programs, its psychology program is known for its research across several disciplines. In 2009 U.S. News and World Report rated the Harvard psychology program No. 3 in the nation. The graduate psychology department at Harvard has four primary areas of emphasis: clinical science, organizational and social behavior, developmental psychology, and the relationship between the brain's cognition and behavior. Harvard's psychology department does not offer a terminal master's degree, but it does offer a coterminal degree in conjunction with its doctorate program.

The second highest rated graduate psychology program in the nation belongs to the University of California--Berkeley (UCB), according to 2009 U.S. News and World Report rankings. Like Harvard, UCB's graduate program is divided into several areas of emphasis. These include brain cognition and behavior, behavioral neuroscience, clinical science, personality and social studies and developmental, plasticity and change studies. Students are encouraged to take courses in other departments as well in order to add additional perspective to their graduate degree studies. Like Harvard, UCB offers a doctorate as its main degree.

The best psychology program in the nation is at Stanford University. U.S. News ranked the Stanford program No. 1 overall in 2009. Like its UCB and Harvard counterparts, Stanford offers a PhD and a coterminal master's degree. Areas of emphasis within the Stanford program are similar to Harvard and UCB as well. Developmental psychology, social psychology, cognitive studies, neuroscience and personality studies are all emphasized by the Stanford program. Stanford's psychology department sponsors several research centers as well such as the Stanford Center of Mind, Brain and Computation and the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences.
