Richard J. Daley College in Chicago is part of the Chicago City College system. While the college offers education in many different fields in liberal arts and sciences, the school also offers specific degrees in mechanical trades. For example, the college offers an associate degree in applied sciences in manufacturing productivity, maintenance mechanic, program transportation and distribution and logistics. Each of these degrees will take two years to complete, but students may also earn a certificate in manufacturing in just one year. Students who enter these programs can expect a combination of hands-on experience and coursework that will prepare them for an entry-level position.

At Kennedy-King College in downtown Chicago, students may earn an associate of applied sciences degree or a certificate in one of two mechanical trades: automotive technology or heating, air conditioning and refrigeration. The automotive program prepares students for careers as a technician, service representative or collision repair specialist. Upon graduation, students will be prepared to service all automotive systems and body areas. Students who complete the heating, air conditioning and refrigeration learn maintenance, design and installation of residential and commercial systems. Kennedy-King College also houses the Dawson Technical Institute, which offers courses and degrees in trades like carpentry, bricklaying, plumbing, concrete masonry, fire protection, home remodeling and welding.

Lincoln Technical Institute operates a campus in Melrose Park, a suburb in Chicago. Prospective students seeking education in mechanical trades can earn the associate of applied science degree or a diploma in four fields: automotive tech, collision repair, electronics systems or medical assisting.
