Colleges That Carry a Photography Degree in Bachelor in Arts

Photography courses are offered at a number of colleges as part of their fine arts program. A few institutes of higher learning offer a Bachelor of Arts degree in photography. Created to provide visual and technical communication skills, photography degrees focus on the the principles and practices of its craft. Career options include industrial, commercial and digital photography along with photo lab technologies and photojournalism.

    • One of the first colleges in the country designed specifically for adults, Thomas Edison State College offers flexible schedules to prepare adults for career changes or advancement. It uses a combination of courses in film production, professional and fine arts photography as well as liberal arts disciplines.

    Gallaudet University

    • Undergraduate studies in photography are offered at Gallaudet University, a school for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. Graduate studies are offered to hearing students as well. The requirements for a BA incorporate 40 hours of general studies, 12 hours of pre-major courses, 36 hours of major and related courses and 32 elective hours for a total of 120 hours. An internship is required.

    Barry University

    • Located in Miami, Florida, Barry University's focus is solely on photography. Its program is designed to immerse you in the field. Or you may structure your curriculum to include more arts courses if you want diversification. It offers a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Traditional film/darkroom coursework is available, as are the latest advances in digital photography.

    Griffith College of Dublin

    • A full-time, three-year program garners a BA in photography at this Irish university. A part-time version is also available. The emphasis is on commercial photography. First-semester courses include Photography Techniques, Practical Photography, Ways of Seeing and Research and Writing Skills.
      Griffith boasts that former students in this major are working in "all spheres of photographic practice."

    Savannah College of Art and Design

    • Presenting locations not only in Savannah, Georgia but in Atlanta, Hong Kong and Lacoste, SCAD offers e-learning too. Twenty-five hours of core curriculum in Drawing I and II, 2-D Design, and Color Theory, 90 hours of general education, 45 hours of photographic concentration, including Black/White Techniques, Color Techniques, History of Photography and Studio Lighting, to name a few, are required for a total of 180 hours.
