Schools That Offer a Bachelor's Degree in Broadcasting in Dallas, Texas

If you want to work in the broadcasting industry, competition is tough. The best head start you can give yourself is a college degree and experience such as an internship or volunteer position at a college or professional television or radio station. In Dallas, Texas, and surrounding areas, several schools offer bachelor's degrees in broadcasting, journalism, radio/television or digital media arts, all of which require coursework in broadcasting and prepare your for a career in the field.
  1. University of Texas Arlington

    • UTA's Department of Communication offers a Bachelor of Arts in Communication with a specialization in broadcasting. The Arlington campus is just west of Dallas, Texas. As a communications major, you are required to take three core courses in communication. You must pass a GSP -- or grammar, spelling and punctuation -- test prior to declaring a major within the department and/or before you take any upper-level courses. A core of 70 percent or better is passing. At UTA, your degree requires a minimum of 39 semester hours and additional courses to total 120 hours, with 36 of those hours being upper-level courses. UTA participates in an internship program so students may gain practical experience.

    Southern Methodist University Meadows School of the Arts

    • SMU offers a BA in journalism for those who wish to work in a variety of media forms. Required courses include 36 hours within the journalism department as well as 80 hours from other departments. Journalism majors must choose either a second major or a minor, preferably in a subject outside the communications area. Within the journalism course offerings, those interested in broadcasting may choose from Broadcast I, Broadcast and II and Broadcast News Seminar in addition to their core curriculum hours, plus 6 hours of electives, 3 hours of electives from the Meadows school, 8 hours of foreign language and 34 hours within the minor or second major.

    • DBU offers a bachelor's degree in communication with a specialization in broadcast communication. You may choose from a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science, with the BS degree requiring more science courses and the BA degree requiring more foreign language hours. In addition to core requirements and electives, broadcast communication majors take seven courses related directly to broadcasting including Fundamentals of Speech Communication, Broadcast Writing and Internship in Communication, as well as two allied courses -- Social Psychology and Principles of Marketing.

    Southwestern Assemblies of God

    • SAGU, just south of Dallas in Waxahachie, Texas, offers a degree in digital media arts. Courses in this degree prepare students to work in cable, radio or television. While the major is not specifically in broadcasting, students learn through their coursework to work with and operate equipment used in broadcasting and to work with a production team for contemporary media. The degree plan includes 61 hours of general education studies, 48 hours of major studies and 18 hours of electives for a total of 127 hours.

    Texas Christian University

    • Students interested in sports will be interested in the TCU Department of Film, Television and Digital Media's degree in sports broadcasting. Students learn to produce remote as well as live athletic events for television and radio. The program requires 37 hours in sports broadcasting coursework as well as TCU core curriculum requirements and electives to total 124 hours.
