Animal Behavior Schools

Drawing on biology and psychology, the study of animal behavior can provide fascinating insights into nature, wildlife and our own humanity. A college degree in animal behavior can lead to careers in conservation, animal advocacy and welfare, zoos and animal training. Not many colleges offer an animal behavior major, but some prestigious liberal arts colleges do.
  1. Bucknell University

    • Founded in the 1840's, Bucknell University is a private university in central Pennsylvania, about 75 minutes from Harrisburg. Bucknell's animal behavior program dates back to 1968, and students can earn either a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree with an animal behavior major. The two programs mainly differ in the number of advanced science courses and labs, and both combine coursework from the biology and psychology departments. Students have the opportunity to study abroad in places like Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

    Southwestern University

    • Located just north of Austin, Southwestern University is a private liberal arts university and the oldest higher learning institution in Texas. Animal behavior is an interdisciplinary major offered through the biology and psychology departments with the goal of a Bachelor of Arts or Science. An animal behavior minor is also available. Students learn through coursework and independent research, and have the opportunity for one-on-one collaborative research. All students majoring in animal behavior are required to complete a year-long capstone project. Usually completed in the senior year in cooperation with one faculty advisor, the capstone project consists of original research in the student's area of interest

    Hampshire College

    • Hampshire College is a private liberal arts college founded in 1965 that continues to be very non-traditional. Instead of grades, Hampshire students get "narrative evaluations," extensive written feedback from faculty members. Hampshire believes this eliminates competition between students, and that employers find the specifics of narrative evaluations more useful than traditional grading. Students pursue Bachelor's degrees in personalized majors they design themselves with the help of faculty, and usually take courses from several of Hampshire's five interdisciplinary Schools. Students studying animal behavior and cognition at Hampshire can take courses through the School of Cognitive Science and the School of Natural Science. Hampshire's resources include The Hampshire College Farm Center, a working farm where students can study and interact with sheep, goats and llamas; hundreds of acres of undisturbed forest and wetlands that are part of the Hampshire campus; and the Hampshire Bioshelter, where students can perform research in aquaculture and marine ecology.

    Canisius College

    • Founded in 1870, Canisius College is a private Jesuit college in Buffalo. Canisius offers an undergraduate major in animal behavior, ecology and conservation, as well as an animal behavior minor. The major program combines the study of the scientific facts and major theories of animal behavior with a focus on the ethics of wildlife conservation. About one-third of the required coursework for the major is electives, so students can study a broad range of topics or focus on specific areas of interest.
