The Best Colleges for Dance Majors

Some of the most prestigious dance programs in the country have been around since the early 20th century. While New York City's has some of the world's top dance schools, many top programs can also be found far away from the metropolis in small towns and cities around the nation.
  1. The Juilliard School

    • The Juilliard School is one of the most prestigious conservatories in the world. The school, founded in 1905, is located at New York City's Lincoln Center. Students enjoy immediate access to the facilities of the performing arts center, which includes the home of the New York City Ballet. Juilliard's dance faculty includes dancers and choreographers from some of the world's top companies. Students can earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts. An annual "Composers and Choreographers" concert allows Juilliard student composers and choreographers to collaborate in creating performances in which all dance students participate.

    Texas Woman's University

    • Texas Woman's University's dance department is one of the oldest in the United States. Created in 1926, it offers degrees for undergraduates and graduates students. Students can earn a BFA, a master's in fine arts or a doctoral degree in dance. The doctoral program in dance is the first of its kind in the nation and TWU, located in the town of Denton, celebrated the 50th anniversary of the program in 2008. Its faculty includes former dancers and choreographers from the world's top companies, including the internationally-recognized Dallas Black Dance Theatre.

    The University of Arizona

    • The University of Arizona's School of Dance is a highly competitive program in Tucson. Students can earn a BFA and a MFA. The school offers a minor for non-dance students. There are six to eight student-produced performances each year. The school has a touring ensemble that travels domestically and abroad. Student resources include a large collection of dance films and videos in the university's library. Faculty members are winners of several performing arts research awards, including grants from the National Endowment of the Arts.

    Oklahoma City University

    • Oklahoma City University's Ann Lacy School of American Dance and Arts Management is considered by many choreographers and publications to be the best dance program in the country. In 2003, Dance Magazine's managing editor called it the "best preparatory dance program in the nation." It was one of the first dance programs to consider tap and jazz as serious dance and include the art forms in its curriculum. Founded in 1981, the school offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in performance, dance management, entertainment business and teaching.
