The Best Colleges for Elementary Education Majors

There are hundreds of colleges and universities that offer elementary education programs. When selecting the best college for elementary education majors, consider the strength of the education program, the college's rankings, faculty experience, internship and practicum opportunities, and course offerings. Research additional criteria that may be important to you, such as location, size, or cost. Be sure to select an elementary education program that is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

    • Michigan State University (MSU) was ranked the best elementary education program in the U.S. in 2010, according to U.S. News & World Report. The elementary education major at MSU is a five-year program that includes a one-year supervised internship at a local public school. Through the elementary education program, students take a core curriculum of 20 credits. Classes in theory, skills assessment, teaching strategies and course-specific methods prepare students to teach all subjects in grades K-5, including language arts, social studies, math and science. The elementary education curriculum prepares students to complete the teacher certification requirements for the state of Michigan.

    University of Wisconsin-Madison

    • The elementary education program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison was ranked second by U.S. News & World Report in 2010. The elementary education major is part of the School of Education's Department of Curriculum and Instruction and includes two learning paths: early childhood/middle childhood, which prepares teachers to work with children from birth through 11 years old; and middle childhood/early adolescence, which prepares teachers to work with children ages 6 through 13. Students learn and apply teaching methods through a five-semester professional sequence, which includes field work, student teaching and teaching practice self-analysis. Students who complete the elementary education program are eligible for the State of Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction certification.
