Urban Performing Colleges in Atlanta, Georgia

A southern media capital, Atlanta, Georgia, hosts several colleges and universities with competitive urban performing arts programs. The city's historically black colleges feature a vibrant history of rival, battling marching bands that constitute just one aspect of the urban performing arts scene at Atlanta colleges.
  1. Morehouse College

    • Founded in 1867, Morehouse College is a private men's historically black college and is the alma mater of civil rights legend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Today Morehouse features several undergraduate academic programs in liberal arts studies, including a music department housed within the school's Division of Humanities & Social Sciences. Music majors at the college are required to take an examination before enrolling in the program, in addition to participating at one of the college's music ensembles, like the Glee Club, marching band, or the jazz ensemble, among others. Morehouse's renowned jazz ensemble has performed for music legends such as Quincy Jones and Stevie Wonder. The college's "House of Funk" marching band once performed at the Super Bowl.

    Spelman College

    • Spelman College is a private women's liberal arts college and is also considered to be among the nation's "Black Ivy League." Founded in 1881, the college features two undergraduate academic programs in performing arts. Students can choose a major or a minor in Spelman's Drama and Dance department. Courses such as Principles of Acting, Choreography, and Black Dance and Popular Culture are just part of the department's far-reaching curriculum. Spelman's music department similarly features a diverse education in music, with concentrations in Piano Performance, Vocal Performance, and Instrumental Performance, among others. With a small student body, a majority of Spelman's music major graduates go on to careers as working musicians or continue their music education at a graduate level of study.

    Clark Atlanta University

    • With a predominantly African American student body, Clark Atlanta University features a Theatre Arts major, housed within the university's Department of Speech Communication and Theatre. The academic program's varied curriculum features coursework in acting and oral interpretation, as well as African American theater studies, aiming to prepare students for prominent careers on the theater stage.
