Search the U.S. Department of Education website for contact information for your state higher education agency. You will need to determine if you need to file a separate LEAP application, or if you apply automatically based on information provided in your federal application for financial aid (FAFSA). For example, Alabama, Alaska, and California use the FAFSA and require no additional form. Arizona, however, does require a separate application.
Fill out your FAFSA, in addition to your own tax documents from the previous year, you will need your spouse's and your parents' (if you are listed as a dependent on their tax returns) W-2, 1099-DIV, 1099-INT, 1099-B and 1099-MISC.
Request a LEAP application. Contact the financial aid office at the school you are attending. Tell the financial aid officer the amounts you have in "Section 3" and "Section 4" of your FAFSA. Ask if you qualify for LEAP assistance, since your maximum income varies by college or university. You may be able to fill out this form online.
Complete your LEAP application by providing your financial information, typically "Section 3" and "Section 4" of the FAFSA. If you live in Washington, D.C., you can apply at dconeapp.dc.gov
