The Biotechnology Institution of the University System of Maryland (UMBI) trains graduate students in five different centers across the state. The Medical Biotechnology Center (MBC) is in the UMBI Medical Research Facility in Baltimore, along with the National Center for Fluorescence of Spectroscopy of the University of Maryland School of Medicine. The MBC specializes in four interdisciplinary programs - membrane biology, muscle biology, molecular medicine and neurosciences - in which students can do work at the lab once enrolled in any of the graduate programs at the University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB). UMBI itself does not confer any degree; but it provides internships as well as postdoctoral positions. Students working at UMBI typically earn graduate degrees in Molecular Medicine, Neuroscience, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at UMB. To be admitted to UMB, students must take the GRE and have completed an undergraduate degree with at least a 3.0 GPA in a field that prepares students for the graduate work they want to pursue. Some programs require an interview as well.

The University of Illinois (UI) offers an interdisciplinary Master's degree in Medical Biotechnology that matches the analytical and research skills of modern biotechnology with communications and business skills. The first and second years of the program will have students taking core courses in biochemistry, cell biology, immunology, pharmacology and statistics. Of those courses, six must be in biotechnology electives. During the third years, students either work on an onsite project or on an internship with an industrial partner affiliated with UI. Students can choose either a thesis or project option for their degree. Students admitted must have at least a 3.0 GPA for the final 60 semester hours of their undergraduate degree and must have three letters of reference from former professors or those who can speak to the applicant's academic competence.

The Biotechnology and Bioengineering Center (BBC) at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) offers students the following seven areas of focus: Cell and Tissue Engineering, Computational Biology, Drug Discovery, Genomics, Molecular Imaging, Proteomics and Technology Development. The BBC also hosts the National Center for Proteomics Research and Development, one of only 10 facilities in the country that is fully funded by the National Institutes of Health. Students can do work at the BBC while progressing on their degree from the Interdisciplinary Program in Biomedical Sciences. The first year's core curriculum includes rotations in labs across the following five academic departments: Biochemistry, Biophysics, Cell, Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, Pharmacology and Toxicology, and Biology, Neurobiology, and Anatomy. Applicants must have a 3.0 cumulative degree for their undergraduate degree and take the GRE.
