The associate's degree program in digital photography at Harrington College of Design teaches photography fundamentals and business skills. Students have access to a photography studio and labs where they learn how to use light sources and photo editing software. The 65-credit program includes coursework in studio lighting, commercial photography and digital imaging. Graduates go on to careers in advertising, editorial and commercial photography.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in photography at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign teaches students art history and theory as well as the photography techniques needed to capture compelling images. Students can take advantage of darkrooms, digital cameras, scanners and printers to produce their work. Coursework in the history of photography, contemporary art, digital media and studio critiques are combined with photography workshops and drawing and design classes.

BFA students at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) take photography, art history and color theory courses and seminars that culminate in a senior exhibition of photographic work. All aspiring photography majors at UIC participate in the School of Art and Design's first-year program of foundation courses; at the end of the first year, students' portfolios are reviewed in order to be accepted into the BFA photography program.
