The Art Academy of Cincinnati uses a unique, faculty designed program to teach students in all of its undergraduate programs, including photography majors. Students majoring in photography are grouped with students of all majors for their freshman year and taught core classes. For the second and third years, photography majors focus on classes in their major which include digital photography, color photography and darkroom photography. Photography majors must also complete studio electives, drawing courses and art history classes. In their final year at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, photography students join students of other majors to complete courses in many disciplines. Photography majors must complete evaluations after every year and at least 123 credit hours are required to graduate with a four-year degree.
The Cleveland Institute of Art offers a major in photography that also encompasses videography. Coursework for the photography major at the Cleveland Institute of Art includes studio lighting, digital and film photography, digital editing, image manipulation and enhancement. Special effects are also an important course in the photography major. Photography students are taught through lectures, assignments, teacher-student conferences and visits with local artists. As photography majors at the Cleveland Institute of Art, students are given the opportunity to attend workshops and have internships with companies like Fujifilm and Polaroid Corporation.
At the University of Akron, students can choose to either minor or major in photography. The photography major is part of the Mary Schiller Myers School of Art. The faculty in the photography department are practicing photographers and give students a hands-on approach to their profession. Darkrooms that are separated for beginning and advanced students, computer labs for digital imaging and commercial photography studios are just a few of the state-of-the-art facilities that the University of Akron offers its photography students.
The Ohio University is the oldest public college in Ohio. This university offers two different photography majors through the School of Visual Communications. These photography majors are photojournalism and commercial photography. The photography programs at Ohio University give students realistic professional training in state-of-the-art facilities that include digital photography labs, Macintosh computers with maximum media storage, and media programs like Dreamweaver and Photoshop. Student organizations such as The National Press Photography Association and Ohio University's Society of Photographic Illustrators are an integral part of both photography majors.
