List of Egyptian Universities

Universities in Egypt have varied histories. Many began as parts of other universities before branching out into their own schools. Some of the older schools, such as Al-Azhar University, focus mostly on the teachings of Islam, whereas more modern schools try to integrate traditional Egyptian culture with Western education standards. Many English-speaking Egyptian universities function as research universities for several different subjects.
  1. Alexandria University

    • Alexandria University's history begins with the establishment of Fouad the First University in 1938. After the desire for higher learning increased, a separate school known as Farouk University was developed in 1942. By 1952, Farouk University became Alexandria University. Alexandria University includes about 30 different departments, such as veterinary medicine, dentistry, and education. Each department features a number of possible majors, including psychology, criminal law, health sciences, and music. For the 2008-2009 school year, over 175,000 undergraduate students were enrolled in the university, with just over 19,000 graduate students.

    American University in Cairo

    • In 1919, a group of Americans founded the American University in Cairo in an effort to further education in that city. Originally, the university educated only men and was set up as a preparatory school and university in one. Starting in 1928, women were allowed to enroll, and the prep school portion of the university closed in 1951.

      AUC is a research university featuring the latest technology for students as well as the largest English-language collection of research books in Egypt. The university has just over 5,000 undergraduate students in addition to just over 1,000 graduate students.

    Cairo University

    • Cairo University began in 1908 as Egyptian University. At the time, students were often sent out to other, more well-established universities to obtain their degrees before returning to teach at the university. Since its original establishment, the university has grown to include 26 different departments, including agriculture, physiotherapy, and nursing. The university is a leading research institution within Egypt and includes a cancer research center. According to the website Top Universities, Cairo University enrolls about 155,000 students. Cairo University is the only Egyptian University to be listed among the Top 500 world universities.

    Tanta University

    • Tanta University was established as an independent university in 1972. Prior to that, the school existed as a branch of the University of Alexandria. This university features 13 different colleges, plus a two-year technical institute. For the 2007-2008 school year, Tanta University had over 102,000 students enrolled. Colleges at Tanta include the dentistry, education, and agriculture.
