Founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson, the University of Virginia was awarded the No. 2 spot on U.S. News & World Report's ranking of public schools in both 2009 and 2010. The College of William & Mary was chartered in 1693 by England's King William III and Queen Elizabeth II, making it the second oldest school in the nation. In 1776, the college was responsible for founding the nation's first Greek academic society, Phi Beta Kappa. In addition, William & Mary boasts the first honor code used at an American college or university. As of the fall 2009, a reported 5,700 undergraduate and 1,925 graduate students were enrolled at William & Mary. Nearly 80 percent of the fall 2009 incoming freshman ranked in the top 10 percent of their high school graduating classes.
