List of the Top European Universities

On U.S. News & World Report's rankings of the top European universities, eight of the top 10 are in the United Kingdom. Other European nations included on the list are Switzerland, France, Ireland, the Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium and Germany.
  1. University of Cambridge

    • Having celebrated its 800th anniversary in 2009, the University of Cambridge received the No. 1 spot on the 2010 U.S. News & World Report list of European colleges and universities. Cambridge comprises 31 colleges, each of which functions as a private institution, and six academic-subject-based schools. Prospective students apply to individual colleges, which make all admissions decisions based on university criteria. The six subject-based schools in the Cambridge system offer undergraduate and graduate degrees in arts and humanities, physical sciences, engineering, social sciences, biological sciences and technology.

    University College London

    • University College London is home to approximately 11,400 undergraduate and 6,200 graduate students, as reported in fall 2009. Nine undergraduate degrees are available: Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Engineering, Bachelor of Laws, Bachelor of Fine Art, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science-Economics, Master in Science, Master of Engineering and Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery. Students can choose to live in one of the two residence halls, one of the 17 student houses or one of the eight intercollegiate halls. In 2010, University College London received the No. 2 ranking on the U.S. News list of the top European colleges and universities.

    Imperial College London

    • Imperial College London, the third school on the 2010 U.S. News-ranked list of European colleges and universities, is a science-based institution of higher education founded in 1907. Approximately 13,019 students from 158 countries were enrolled in the college as of fall 2008. In addition to the undergraduate program, Imperial College London is home to two graduate schools: the Graduate School of Life Sciences and Medicine and the Graduate School of Engineering and Physical Sciences.
