List of Universities in Turkmenistan

There are 18 institutions of higher education in Turkmenistan, 16 of which are located in the capital city of Ashgabat. The languages of instruction are Turkmen and Russian, although students receive some training in English as well. Almost all of the institutions award bachelor's degrees (bakalavr), and in 2008, several schools were authorized to offer graduate degrees on the old Soviet model (kandidat nauk and doktor nauk). Tuition is heavily subsidized by the government, but competition for admission is intense.

  1. Turkmen State University

    • Turkmen State University is the flagship school of Turkmenistan, and is the only school that charges a moderate tuition. Founded in 1931 as the Ashgabat Pedagogical Institute, it was originally an agricultural school. it currently offers a wide array of courses in the arts and sciences.

    Turkmen Polytechnic Institute

    • The Turkmen Polytechnic Institute is best known for its schools of architecture and engineering. A major expansion of the school was announced in January 2010, with the construction of major new facilities.
