Located in Detroit, Wayne State provides both undergraduate and graduate training in nutrition and food science. The Nutrition Department also offers an accredited coordinated program in dietetics. Due to its location, the school has created a program dedicated to educating the public on the proper use of food and the benefits of a balanced diet. Courses focus on the impact of overeating and the diseases related to this because Detroit has a high incidence of obesity and related illnesses. Wayne State has programs funded by grants from private foundations and the federal government. Students must complete two years of core credits as well as degree-specific classes, labs and clinic hours to be considered for graduation. Upon graduation, students are qualified to seek employment as nutritionists or counselors. The program is accredited by the ADA through 2014.

Created by combining two of its health-related schools, the SUNY School of Public Health and Health Professions opened in 2003. Potential nutrition students must be admitted to the university and complete two years of prerequisites. If all core classes are completed, the student then is admitted to the program. SUNY Buffalo provides two distinct areas of study: nutrition science and clinical nutrition. Both fields can be customized to fit a career goal through electives. The Science track is designed for students with a biological science background and can be used as a basis for future attendance at a graduate level. The Clinical Nutrition program is for students who wish to become registered dieticians. Both areas require 20 credit hours of degree-specific core classes and nine credits of electives. In addition to class credits, students must choose an exam, project or thesis option and complete this requirement for graduation. Students then proceed to their chosen career, or pursue a graduate degree. The undergraduate program is one of the smallest in the nation, with a teacher-to-student ratio of about 16-to-1, and is accredited by the ADA through 2013.

Loma Linda University sits about 60 miles east of Los Angeles and provides an accredited bachelor's program in Dietetics and Nutrition. The program is a combination of science--learning how the body uses food--and dietetics, which teaches the art of food and how to make eating healthy a better experience. This combination earns graduates a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition degree, and students often work as dietetic technicians, nutritionists or counselors. Graduates of Loma Linda also can continue on to medical school or a nutrition graduate degree. According to the school website, the program results in more than 80 percent of graduates passing the licensure exam on the first attempt. Five years later, upon license renewal, more than 70 percent pass the first attempt. Students must complete the university's core requirements, as well as degree-specific courses, labs and instructor-monitored clinic hours. The school is up for an accreditation renewal in 2014.
