What Universities Specialize in the Study of Psychology

The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that the job outlook for psychologists is good, with employment for psychologists "expected to grow 12 percent from 2008 to 2018." If you're considering pursuing a degree in psychology, there are a number of colleges and universities that are known for their psychology programs that you could consider attending.
  1. Stanford University

    • Stanford University, located in Stanford, California, offers undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral degrees in psychology through its School of Humanities and Sciences. In 2003, Stanford's psychology department was honored by the Smithsonian Institution for being one of a number of departments of Stanford that has been ranked number one in the nation for over 50 years.

      Currently, Stanford psychologists are working with law professors at the university to study the limits of brain scans as legal evidence used in clinical trials. The study is being led by psychologist Anthony Wagner. The study's findings were published in a May 2010 edition of the publication "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences."

    Yale University

    • Yale University is an Ivy League school located in New Haven, Connecticut. Yale's Department of Psychology offers five research areas that students can specialize in: behavioral neuroscience, clinical, cognitive, developmental and social/personality.

      There are a number of research centers and programs associated with Yale's psychology department, including the Family Television Research and Consultation Center and the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity.

    University of Pennsylvania

    • The University of Pennsylvania's website states that Penn's Department of Psychology is the longest-functioning psychology department in North America. Furthermore, a number of leading psychologists have completed Penn's psychology graduate program. Faculty in the department focus their studies on a number of research areas, including mood disorders, social cognition, autism and sleep.

      University of Pennsylvania psychologist Edna Foa was featured as one of the "2010 Time 100" for her work to end the suffering caused by post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

    Columbia University

    • Columbia University is another university that's considered an Ivy League school. The university is located in New York City, and its psychology department was established in 1890. The department offers an honors program, as well as a neuroscience and behavior major that is offered in conjunction with the biology department.

      Columbia psychology lecturer Carl Hart was featured in the February 2010 edition "Wired UK" for his studies of how drugs affect humans.
