How to Write a Letter of Intent for an Internship

A letter of intent informs the reader on your plans of action for a job or internship and addresses your objectives and goals. Writing a letter of intent requires persuasive language and knowledge of business letter format. A cover letter directs your reader to your resume, but the letter of intent defines your objectives for the reader. Following a standard outline, you will be able to communicate effectively what your goals are and how you can be an asset for an internship opportunity.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the date in the upper left-hand corner. You can use block formatting and the entire letter will be left justified and single-spaced, with the exception of double-spacing between paragraphs. Use Times New Roman 12-point font.

    • 2

Write the recipient's address, placing a double space in between the address and the date. Write the name of the company and underneath that, the name of your recipient. Be sure to address the person properly using "Mr." or "Ms." Write the city, state and ZIP code.

    • 3

Write the salutation using the recipient's last name. The salutation should include the proper term, "Dear." If the recipient's name is unknown it is acceptable to use "To Whom It May Concern."

    • 4

Write the introduction informing the reader that this is a letter of intent. Include three to five sentences that describe your reason for writing. For example, "I am writing this letter of intent to communicate how I will be an asset to your company."

    • 5

Write the body with language that is clear and direct to your point. Explain to the reader your intentions and discuss any goals you have in mind for the internship. An example statement for a graphic design internship could be, "My goal is to further my understanding of the design and layout process. I intend to reach this goal by observation." Include three to four goals.

    • 6

Write the closing. Thank the reader for his or her time. Close with any other information you would like the reader to know, like your availability to discuss your internship goals or your contact information.

    • 7

Write the closing signature, using "Sincerely," "Respectfully submitted," or "Thank you." After a double space, write your full name.

    • 8

Spell check your letter for errors and proofread for clarity.
