Review academic and non-academic work completed in high school, summer schools and in any undergraduate courses. Use a ballpoint pen and piece of paper to write down which subjects, topics and theories were meaningful and why.
Compile this review into an intellectual autobiography. Annotate meaningful courses, experiences, skills or academic experiences to illustrate the justification for future study.
Write down future academic and professional goals and how your past history and current application will prime you to meet them.
Ask your current teachers and instructors for departmental recommendations based on your intellectual autobiography and future goals.
Choose a department to apply to and research the department to confirm your application will be in sync with the department's strengths.
Review further the department's web page and online catalog. Read the biographies of faculty members. Write down specific things you like about the department and faculty to use in the letter.
Review all specific requirements for the letter of intent given by the department. Note who specifically to address the letter to and the requested format and deadline.
Write a first draft of the letter of intent using a word processor. Format the letter like a business letter, using a formal introduction and including the date at the top, your name and contact information, then the name and contact information for the addressee. Use formal salutations.
Introduce yourself and clearly state your intellectual autobiography in the first paragraph. State reasons for applying to the department in the body of the letter. Use the examples pulled from the department's website and your own history and interests to emphasize the match between you, your goals and the department. Conclude the letter by thanking the committee for their consideration.
Review the draft and check to ensure that the department's specifications have been met.
Edit the letter for grammar, punctuation, spelling and general clarity.
Print the letter of intent and submit it to the undergraduate departmental admissions coordinator, along with any other application materials, by the deadline.
