Heavy machinery operators are individuals who use machinery to move construction materials and clear land for structures such as buildings and bridges. Employment of these operators is projected to climb 12 percent from 2008 to 2018, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. In 2010, heavy equipment operators earned between $33,003 and $54,443, according to the website Payscale.com. Several schools across the country train students to become heavy equipment operators through classroom instruction and hands-on experience.

    West Coast Training

    • West Coast Training in Woodland, Washington, offers an eight-week heavy equipment training course. During the 320-hour program, students spend half of their time learning in the classroom and the other half gaining practical experience in a construction work environment under instructor supervision. Students practice operating backhoes, trackhoes, loaders and bulldozers and must specialize in two pieces of equipment. They spend approximately four hours operating their own equipment each day. They also practice doing basic surveying, equipment setup and preventive maintenance on machinery. Classroom instruction covers topics such as applied math, volume computations, safety and engineering.     York Technical College
