West Coast Training in Woodland, Washington, offers an eight-week heavy equipment training course. During the 320-hour program, students spend half of their time learning in the classroom and the other half gaining practical experience in a construction work environment under instructor supervision. Students practice operating backhoes, trackhoes, loaders and bulldozers and must specialize in two pieces of equipment. They spend approximately four hours operating their own equipment each day. They also practice doing basic surveying, equipment setup and preventive maintenance on machinery. Classroom instruction covers topics such as applied math, volume computations, safety and engineering. Established in 1959, West Coast Training is an accredited training unit of the National Center for Construction Education and Research.

York Technical College in Rock Hill, South Carolina, offers heavy equipment operator training for students who want to operate and transport motor graders, bulldozers, front-end loaders and excavators used to help clear and grade land, dig ditches for utilities, lay pipe and build ponds and roads. Students may enroll in either the basic or advanced training program, based on their previous experience in the field. While in the program, students practice operating heavy machinery on a 26-acre area near Chester, South Carolina.
