Colleges in Georgia That Have Speech Pathology Majors

Students seeking to pursue a degree in speech-language pathology or communication science disorders can choose from four schools in Georgia, all public institutions operated by the University System of Georgia. Three of the four are located within an hour of Atlanta. All four schools offer financial aid, including the HOPE scholarship.

    • The University of West Georgia offers both a Bachelor of Science in Education with a major in Speech Pathology and a Master of Education in Speech-Language Pathology through the school's department of special education. West Georgia is located roughly 40 miles due west of Atlanta in Carrollton. With an annual enrollment of about 11,000 students, it is the smallest Georgia school to offer these programs. West Georgia was named both one of the Best Southeastern Colleges and one of America's Best Value Colleges by "The Princeton Review." West Georgia boasts an on-campus speech and hearing clinic that allows student clinicians to practice with real clients, under professional supervision.

    • The University of Georgia (UGA), located on 615 acres about an hour northeast of Atlanta, offers a Bachelor of Science in Education with a major in Communication Science and Disorders, A Master of the Arts in Communication Science and Disorders and a Master of Education in Communication Science and Disorders. Founded in 1785, UGA is both the oldest public college in Georgia and the first state-chartered university in the country. Roughly 35,000 students enroll at UGA each year. UGA is both a prestigious research university and home of one of collegiate sports' best-known teams, the Georgia Bulldogs.

    Georgia State University

    • Georgia State, located in the heart of Atlanta, offers a Master's of Education Degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders. The program is open to only 18 to 20 students per year and includes both academic and clinical components. Georgia State operates a speech, language and hearing clinic that allows students to work with real-life clients. Georgia State enrolls about 30,000 students from over 160 countries annually and employs more than 1,000 faculty members. It is one of the top 100 universities in the nation in terms of doctoral degrees awarded and sponsors 16 NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletic teams.

    Valdosta State University

    • Valdosta State University offers a Bachelor of Science in Education degree with a major in Communication Disorders and a Master's of Education Degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders. Located in South Georgia, just 20 miles north of the Florida border, Valdosta is the only Georgia school offering speech-language pathology programs outside the metro Atlanta area. On average, 97 percent of Valdosta students taking the PRAXIS II Exam in Speech-Language Pathology achieve a passing score. About 11,500 students enroll at Valdosta each year, most from Georgia. Almost a third of students are self-declared minorities.
