Police Academy Schools

The training needed to become a police officer varies by city and state. Some departments require officers have a college degree, preferably in criminal justice or a related major, while others do not. Police academies specifically teach the skills needed to become an officer, but they may not be open to everyone. While some police academies take students from the general public, others only accept students who are recommended to them from local departments and agencies.
  1. Broward Police Academy

    • The Broward Police Academy is a part of Broward College.The academy does not offer open enrollment, but is only available to students officially approved by a police department. Prospective police officers must first complete training before finishing the hiring process can do so at the Broward Police Academy, with the department usually paying for tuition. Training at the academy lasts approximately 22 weeks. Classes are scheduled full-time during the day, Mondays through Fridays. Besides classes in firearms, patrol techniques, first aid and defensive tactics, students also learn report writing, interpersonal skills and information about population diversity. Broward College also offers an associate degree in criminal justice. Any student interested in becoming an officer needs to meet Florida's minimum requirements including a swimming test, a physical agility exam and two written tests.

    New York State Police Academy

    • The New York State Police has its own academy for troopers. Persons interested in joining the state police must first take and pass a state examination. The New York State Police force has two divisions, uniformed officers and the Bureau of Investigation, which together provide patrol services, crime analysis, forensic science, accident reconstruction and crisis negotiation. The academy enrolls about 14,000 students per year, mostly people training to begin their careers with the New York State Police. Some students are from outside agencies, taking courses in forensics and specialized issues. Tours of the academy can be arranged by scheduling in advance.

    Buckeye State Police Academy

    • The Buckeye State Police Academy is an independent school in Ohio which does not require students to already be hired by a police department. If you are a sworn officer with an Ohio law enforcement agency, however, enrollment is guaranteed. Open enrollment students must meet certain conditions before being accepted. You must be a minimum of 21 years old; have no felony convictions; possess a current Ohio state driver's license; have no convictions of domestic violence; and complete at least 50 percent of the physical agility tests required by the state before enrollment. As of 2010, Buckeye State Police Academy staff include experienced police officers, a captain with more than 30 years of experience, state troopers, a graduate of the FBI training academy and two chiefs of police.
