Colleges Near Chambersburg, Pennsylvania

Chambersburg is the county seat of Franklin County in southern-central Pennsylvania. The region was the site of several clashes between the Union and Confederate armies during the Civil War, according to the Franklin County Visitors Bureau. Today there are ample opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts, history buffs and families. There are a variety of higher education opportunities in the area, ranging from a women's college to a vocational training center.

    • Founded in 1869, Wilson College is a small, Presbyterian-affiliated women's college. There is also a co-ed adult degree program available for students more than 24 years of age, according to Wilson College's website. There are 300 traditional-aged students on campus and 400 students in the adult degree program. Wilson offers a unique opportunity for single mothers through the Women with Children Program. Women who have children older than 20 months are eligible to live in on-campus housing while pursuing a bachelor's degree full time.

    Shippensburg University

    • Shippensburg University opened in 1871 as the Cumberland Valley State Normal School. Today Shippensburg serves 6,600 undergraduate and 1,000 graduate students, according to the college's website. With 324 faculty members, the student-to-faculty ratio is 19 to 1. Shippensburg has nine residence halls, 18 varsity sports teams and more than 200 clubs and organizations.

    Penn State Mont Alto

    • Penn State University's Mont Alto branch is a "small campus with a big degree," according to the college's website. Approximately 1,200 students are enrolled full-time and part-time, with 23 percent adult learners more than 24 years old. The student-to-faculty ratio is 16 to 1, with 60 full-time faculty and 60 adjuncts. The college was founded in 1903 as the Pennsylvania State Forest Academy. In 1929, Pennsylvania combined the academy with Penn State, creating the Mont Alto campus.

    Franklin County Career and Technology Center

    • The Franklin County Career and Technology Center serves 900 secondary school students as well as 300 adult learners, according to the college's website. FCCTC offers 21 vocational programs in five academies: construction, business, services, production and transportation. Students can choose programs in a variety of career fields, including marketing and web design, landscaping and horticulture, culinary arts, welding, electronics and auto mechanics.
