UTech's sports department has produced several Olympic athletes; all facilities are open to any member of the student body or the faculty. The university allows students to participate competitively or at a recreational level. Thirteen sports were available to students in 2010: badminton; basketball; netball; football; swimming; table tennis; tennis; cricket; hockey; golf; squash; track and field and basketball.
The university owns an auditorium containing a gym, a squash court, a martial arts area, and a floor for basketball, netball, badminton, table tennis and volleyball. Outside, is a cricket pitch; a swimming pool; a running track; a soccer field; tennis, badminton, netball, basketball and volleyball courts; and a golf putting green.
The University of Technology undertakes two annual community outreach projects. The Teach the Youth Program allows students to volunteer to provide education for rural children over the summer break in two local communities. The Tag Drive takes place over a week in November; students attempt to make as much money as possible for local charities by putting together fund raising events such as art exhibitions and musical concerts.
The University of Technology offers a broad range of clubs and societies; students may create their own if they do not find one to their taste. A Clubs and Societies Advisory Board (CSAB) exists to help individuals to further their interests and meet like-minded individuals. The 2009-2010 student hand book listed over 30 clubs, ranging from the Tourism Action Club to the Poetry Club to the Tae-Kwon-Do Club.
Members of the student body may apply for a position on the Student Union, this allows them to help to voice the needs of their fellow students and take an active role in the development of the university.
