Community Colleges in Reno, Nevada

Reno, Nevada, is located 25 minutes from the northern California border, in the western end of the state. Home to more than 200,000 residents--as of August 2010--the city offers a number of options for people in search of higher education, including one of the state's four community college systems. Truckee Meadows Community College, founded in 1979, was established after the state's governing board divided Western Nevada Community College.
  1. Dandini Campus

    • TMCC's Dandini Campus is home to the community college's managerial hub. Students in need of records information, admissions and general services atttend Dandini. The site also houses the Elizabeth Sturm Library. Founded in 1971, the library was named for its first librarian, who also played an active role in establishing this and other Nevada libraries. Dandini also houses various labs, seminars and learning assistance options, as well as TMCC's art galleries.

    High Tech Center at Redfield

    • TMCC's High Tech Center at Redfield, established in 2005, offers nearly 35,000 square feet of learning space. Students pursue programs that include English, philosophy and communication. The Truckee Meadows Community College system, in partnership with the University of Nevada, jointly offers a unique study option. Students embark on an associate's degree program, and later an undergraduate degree option, solely at the campus. The center offers a computer lab, library and online learning options.

    Meadowood Center

    • The Meadowood Center of TMCC, established in 2003, provides options for students seeking learning assistance and continuing education courses. Students in need of secondary education completion pursue General Educational Development testing assistance. The test consists of sections on math, science, social studies, reading and writing--all of which are covered at the campus's GED program. Students must attend an orientation to determine their skill levels. Courses are held Monday through Thursday, day or evening, over a course of two sessions of six weeks each. Students are allotted longer preparation times.

    IGT Applied Technology Center

    • TMCC's IGT Applied Technology Center, established in 1999, is a facility of more than 95,000 square feet, offering technical education opportunities. Students may pursue an associate's degree in applied science, various certifications or obtain general preparation in technology-based programs. The campus also offers a business prep room and partnerships with local companies. From these partnerships, corporations use the center as a training facility. The center's programs are modified according to a company's needs. Some participants obtain training via distance learning.

    Nell J. Redfield Foundation Performing Arts Center

    • TMCC's Nell J. Redfield Foundation Performing Arts Center houses the college's artistic pursuits. Students undertake coursework in art, music, dance and other performing arts. Founded in 2003, the center is named for a well-known Nevada patron, and founder of the Nell J. Redfield Foundation. The performing arts center is also home to an auditorium, allowing for the presentation of plays, concerts and other performances.
